The National Highway Transportation and Safety Agency (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) reported the following statistics:
  • In 2008, there were 34,017 fatal motor vehicle crashes, with approximately 15.5% involving motorcycles.

  • 32% of all fatal crashes involve alcohol impaired driving.

  • 65% of fatal crashes occurring between midnight to 3am involve alcohol impaired driving.

  • The 5 states with the highest traffic fatality rates in 2008 are California, Florida, Texas, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

  • The 5 states with the lowest traffic fatality rates in 2008 are the District of Columbia, Alaska, Rhode Island, Vermont and North Dakota.
