Quick Facts about Avandia®

William is a 54 year old engineer for a military contractor.  He is a married father of 3 children, ranging from 10 to 18 years old.  For the most part, William was considered healthy who regularly enjoyed cycling and hiking.  His eating habits were typically healthful ones and he lived a relatively stress-free life.  Approximately 2 years ago, William began to show signs of fatigue, increased hunger and weight loss.  He attributed this to the stress of his recent promotion to a Senior Vice President.  While on a business trip, he noticed that he had an increased thirst and began to drink as much water as he could.  As a result, his urination increased but it seemed no matter what he did, the thirst was never quenched.  When he returned home, he visited his family physician and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

After careful review and analysis, his family physician prescribed increased regular exercise, continued healthful eating patterns and prescribed the drug, Avandia, which was marketed as being able to help patients monitor and control irregular fluctuations of insulin.  William’s doctor believed that with the combination of exercise, diet and Avandia, William could lead a normal, healthy life.

William began to take Avandia. For the first month, he experienced headaches and flu-like symptoms (body aches, chills, fatigue). He returned to his doctor, who explained these symptoms were normal and should disappear within 60 days. At the end of 60 days, the flu-like symptoms were gone and his insulin levels were under control. However, he developed a seemingly endless cough that was diagnosed as a persistent upper respiratory tract infection. More alarming, when William attempted to exercise daily, he became exhausted within 15 minutes and could not continue. He repeatedly returned to his doctor who told him to continue on the program and that in time his body would adjust.

After 18 months, William’s diabetes was under control.  However, he was constantly tired and had gained an alarming 30 pounds.  When getting ready for bed one evening, he began to feel tightness in his chest, accompanied by sharp shooting pains in his arm.  His wife called 911 and he was rushed to a local area hospital where he told he was in the middle of heart attack.  After the hospital team reviewed his medications, health history and developed a treatment plan, William’s  medical team immediately took  him off Avandia, expressing concern that the drug may have caused the heart attack.

William began to research Avandia and was shocked to see all the conflicting and controversial findings from the medical research community.  He realized the need to work with an experienced legal team with a proven track record of substantial financial recovery against large pharmaceutical companies.
