Dangerous Medicines: Side effects of Avandia® (Rosiglitazone Maleate)

In 1999, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) introduced the drug, Avandia, and marketed it for the purpose of improving blood sugar control for adults with Type 2 diabetes.  According to PBS’s, “Need to Know”, nearly half a million adults take this drug on a regular basis, which translates to approximately $900 million in annual sales for GSK.  Since its introduction, Avandia has been surrounded by a sea of controversy involving non-disclosure of drug study side effect results, organizational law suits, and finally in 2007, the alarming published report by the Cleveland Clinic in the New England Journal of Medicine showing patients taking Avandia experienced significant increased heart attack risk and death.  In 2010, the FDA advised that the drug should be monitored closely due to increased heart attacks.
