Burn Injury Quick Facts

Burn victims have a story to tell. Most of us can never fully understand the emotional and physical trauma burn victims experience. The excruciating physical pain starts from the skin and can reach the muscles, bones and organs. The surgeries and medical procedures necessary to repair the body are difficult to endure. Many victims of explosion and burn injuries experience limited flexibility and movement which forever impact their lives. Sadly, the emotional distress of living with the scars can be the worst pain of all—the humiliation of being stared at or rejected because of the scars is devastating.

Frank was a forty-five year old, part-time stocking clerk for a large company that owned and operated dozens of convenience stores/gas stations. A store manager noticed slow fuel pumping and reported it to Frank with an instruction to change the fuel filters located within the dispensers, the most likely reason for the problem. Frank began the process of removing the fuel filter when gasoline began spraying from the connection between the fuel line leading to the underground pumps and the filter. Because of the extreme pressure, Frank was unable to stop the flow. A nearby car released a spark which caused a catastrophic fire and explosion. Frank was caught in the middle of this inferno: His entire upper body and head were engulfed in flames.

Frank’s physical injuries included burns to over 50% of his body surface area, extreme and permanent scarring, breathing problems, recurring skin infections, loss of sensation in his extremities and the ability to regulate his body heat.   Frank also experienced great mental suffering, including post traumatic stress disorder, as he began to understand that his injuries and disfigurement would prevent his ever working again to support his family.  As a result of this tragic accident, Frank requires some on-going care but, more importantly to him, he has lost the ability to do much of what he loved: Work, hunt and fish because he cannot lift or hold heavy objects and cannot be outside in the heat or cold because his body can no longer adequately regulate his temperature or produce sweat.

After a bitterly fought battle with the oil and real estate holding companies that owned the pumps and the land, the Law Offices of Stuart A. Kritzer, P.C. helped Frank and his family obtain a substantial cash settlement which will provide financial security for the future.
