Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), is a complicated neurological condition evidenced by severe, chronic pain coupled with growing changes to skin, muscle, joints and bone.

Millions of people in the United States may suffer from RSD/CRPS.  This condition usually occurs in an injured arm, hand or leg, caused by something as minor as a sprain or broken bone or from a serious crush injury, and spreads in a progressive manner.  Many people injured in accidents with what appears to be relatively minor injuries can later suffer from the painful effects of RSD/CRPS.  Tragically, other problems like depression, sleeplessness, suicidal tendencies, anxiety, mood swings, and overall reduced quality of life are direct effects of RSD/CRPS.

RSD/CRPS is characterized by 2 Types: Type 1 is referred to as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) and Type 2 as Causalgia. Both Types include varying degrees of extreme pain, swelling, skin color changes (red or bluish tint), excessive sweating and sensitivity. The difference between RSD and Causalgia is second includes nerve damage / injury whereas first does not.

The National Institute of Health recently published an article defining the three progressive stages associated with CRPS:
  • Stage One: (1 to 3 months) is characterized by severe, burning pain along with muscle spasm, joint stiffness, rapid hair growth, skin color changes / temperature.

  • Stage Two: (3 to 6 months) is characterized by intensifying pain, swelling, decreased hair growth, cracked, brittle, grooved or spotty nails, softened bones, stiff joints and weak muscle tone.

  • Stage Three is the point where changes in the skin and bone are no longer reversible. In many cases, the pain becomes unbearable, spreading to the entire limb of the affected area, muscle loss (atrophy), limited mobility, involuntary muscle contractions and distorted limbs.
