Ortho Evra® birth control patch
On November 10, 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the Ortho Evra® contraceptive patch exposes millions of women who use them to significantly higher doses of hormones and may put them at greater risk for blood clots and other serious side effects. The FDA also approved updated labeling for the Ortho Evra® contraceptive patch to warn healthcare providers and patients about the increased risk.
This warning came after the FDA received twenty-one reports of life-threatening blood clots and other ailments associated with Ortho Evra® birth control patch use. The contraceptive patch, manufactured by Ortho-McNeil and aggressively marketed to consumers and doctors as a convenient alternative to oral birth control pills, exposes women to 60 percent more estrogen than daily birth control pills.
Since it was approved by the FDA in 2002, more than 5 million woman have used the Ortho Evra® contraceptive skin patch for birth control. The patch releases ethinyl estradiol, estrogen hormone, and norelgestromin, a progestin hormone, through the skin into the bloodstream. It only needs to be changed once a week.
The important and apparently dangerous difference in how it works is that rather than digestion and metabolization of the hormones, as with the birth control pill, the Ortho Evra® patch causes the hormones to be released directly into the blood. Significantly higher concentrations of hormones are possible through this method of delivery, concentrations that have been linked to serious adverse health issues and even death.
While using the Ortho Evra® birth control patch, did you or someone you know…
- Suffer from blood clots?
- Suffer from deep vein thrombosis?

- Die from the consequences of one of the above?
