    Nursing Home/Elder Abuse Quick Statistics

  • According to the CDC 2004 Nursing Home Survey, there are approximately 1.5 million residents in 16,100 nursing homes with 1.7 million beds and an 86% occupancy rate.

  • Elder abuse can occur anywhere – in the home, in extended care facilities or other institutions and affects those from all socio-economic groups, cultures, and races.

  • Women and “older” elders are more likely to be victimized.

  • Elders are often reluctant to report their mistreatment. Experts estimate that no more than one in six cases is reported.

  • All 50 states have systems for reporting suspected abuse and laws against elder abuse.
