Dangerous Medicines: Fleet® Phospho-Soda®

Fleet® Phospho-Soda® has been marketed and available to consumers over-the-counter since 1869.  Originally sold as a use at home laxative, it was marketed as the Fleet® Phospho-Soda® EZ-Prep® Bowel Cleansing System for  bowel / intestinal preparation prior to medical procedures like colonoscopies.   After using these products, a number of consumers experienced acute kidney injury, nephrocalcinosis, a condition where calcium and phosphate particles block blood flow in the kidneys, causing acute kidney failure.  In many cases, irreparable damage has been caused, with some cases leading to death. 

In 2005, a group of medical researchers published a study citing chronic kidney failure caused by the use of oral sodium phosphate like the Fleet® Phospho-Soda®.  Furthermore, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that the Fleet® Phospho-Soda® is not safe when used at the dosage recommended by Fleet for bowel cleansing.   Fleet, the manufacturer of the Fleet® Phosphor-Soda®, continues to market the product.
