Sarah is a 29 year old emergency room nurse, wife and mother of two children. Last winter, she slipped and fell on icy sidewalk in front of a local shopping center entrance and landed on her right side. As a precaution, she went to the hospital for evaluation and testing. An x-ray showed a hairline fracture in her elbow. She was sent home with pain medication and told to take it easy for 4 to 6 weeks.

Within 3 days, she experienced violent, extraordinary pain from her right shoulder down through her finger tips. At times, it felt like electric charges were running through her! Sarah visited her primary care physician who dismissed her symptoms as nothing, told her it was normal and that they should go away in a month or so, when the fracture healed. As the days and weeks past, Sarah continued to experience the sharp, shooting pains and then developed extreme sensitivity to touch, redness of the skin and an inability to lift anything heavy. She was unable to perform her duties as an ER nurse and was placed on short term disability. By the end of the 4th week, Sarah’s arm began to swell and the pain was unbearable. Pain medication did nothing to alleviate her symptoms. Worst of all, she began to experience severe depression.

Sarah visited many specialists. After a number of tests, she was diagnosed with Type 2 Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (also known as Causalgia and/or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, RSD/CRPS). Sarah now suffers from an incurable condition that affects all aspects of her life: Career, family, physical, emotional and psychological. Because there is no cure for RSD/CRPS, the goal is to find a comprehensive pain management program which utilizes physical and psychological strategies.
