Burn Injuries: Frank's Story

Burn Degree Classifications:
There are three general degrees of burns, each characterized by the victim’s age and the burn location’s size and depth:

1st degree or superficial burns are the least severe, not life threatening and usually heal without scars within 5 days. Injury symptoms include pain and reddened skin. These burns are caused by sun and hot liquids;

2nd degree (partial thickness) burns damage the top skin layers and cause blistering. Symptoms include pain, reddened, splotchy skin appearance, blisters and the affected area is less than 3 inches in diameter. Most 2nd degree burn injuries heal within 21 days.

3rd degree burns involve all layers of the skin and cause permanent tissue damage. These are serious burn injuries. In many cases, fat, muscle, bone and organs are affected. Symptoms include numbness, redness, swelling, pain, peeling skin and white or charred skin. Recovering from 3rd degree burn injuries is time intensive as skin grafts are necessary for repair and usually result in extensive scarring.
