Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Quick Facts

Vicky is a 34 year old 3rd grade school teacher.  She and her husband are the parents of 5 year old twin daughters.  Last spring, while driving home from work in rush hour highway traffic, she was involved in an automobile wreck.  In stop and go traffic, she was rear ended by a large SUV which caused her car to slam into the rear of another vehicle.  The impacts from the two collisions were so powerful that the SUV pushed Vicky’s bumper 2 feet into the rear of Vicky’s mid-size car.  Although she was wearing her seatbelt, due to the severe force of the collision, her head hit the windshield and she became unconscious for a few minutes.

Vicky was transported by ambulance to a hospital emergency room where she was diagnosed with a head contusion. She remained in the hospital overnight for observation as she was confused, wobbly, disoriented and complained of a severe headache. She was sent home and prescribed bed rest for 1 week. When she went back to work, she was unable to complete the day as she was plagued with neck stiffness, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, short term memory loss, moodiness, depression and vision problems.

Vicky made an appointment with her primary care physician who prescribed an over-the-counter pain medication and an anti-depressant for her moodiness and depression. Additionally, she was referred to a physical therapist and advised to take 10 days off work.

Vicky participated in a conservative course of physical therapy and took the antidepressant and pain medication for 3 months. She continued to experience extreme fatigue, moodiness, headaches, poor concentration, diminished organizational skills and vision problems. Worst of all, Vicky felt hopeless.

During her initial consultation with Mr. Kritzer, he recognized the signs and symptioms of TBI and referred Vicky to a neuropsychiatrist, a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injuries. He confirmed what Mr. Kritzer suspected and diagnosed her with a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) from a motor vehicle collision. Although there is no cure for MTBI side effects, treatment can include physical therapy, drugs and counseling strategies. Vicky received treatment which improved her day to day management of her affairs but she continues to struggle. We filed a lawsuit against the other driver on her behalf to obtain justice for her when the insurance company chose not to compensate her fairly.
